Green River (Kentucky, 2007-08-11)
The old faithful canoe/campground on the Blue River in Indiana no longer offered camping at the end (owner had issues with alcohol on the campgrounds... hrmmm.)
- We found a new place on the Green River (Munfordville, KY). There's a lot of aspects that make up a good overnight canoe/camping trip (for us), and never has any place meet them all. This place did.
- Less than an hour drive
- Laid back atmosphere (re: drinking/camping on the river and strict timelines)
- Extremely good outfitter (Big Buffalo Crossing) that went overboard (no pun intended) at accomodating us
- Several trip options (paddle length, put-in/take-out/campground locations and drive-ability to each).
Our mission was to take-out and camp at a site where our cars were waiting (with the heavy gear.) We never had to make a single put-in or take-out reservation time - even after Kit's truck broke down and set us back an hour on arrival. Big Buffalo Crossing even shuttled us around like a makeshift emergency road service, yet still were completely amazing at accomodating, then even extending, our goals with a non-advertised trip itinerary. - Clear, deep (even in a drought) river with no trash or other things to break the isolation - we heard only two cars in over 8 hours of paddling
- Beautiful scenery, w/springs, waterfalls, etc. for our entire paddle
- Not something ever expected, but something that will change as people find out about this place: we never overtook, were overtaken, or even saw any other paddlers the entire two day trip.
Awesome. It's our new home. Can't wait to head back during fall.
PS: Most of the photos are geo-coded, however the tree canopy blocked the satellite locks occasionally. I didn't have my GPS at all on the second day. Check out the "Google Earth feed" at the bottom of this page for some cool geographical pic browsing.
Beautiful river at dusk.
Key word: dusk. I don't think we'll be making camp by nightfall, as... according to the ol' GPS... we still have at least an hour of paddling left. And the GPS was right, yet again.
