2. Mobile, Alabama

Downtown UberCrib (1997-1998)

I only got to live in this apartment for a little less than a year, but it is, to this day, the greatest place that I have ever lived. It won "Best Apartment in Mobile" by one of the local rags a couple of years before I got it. It's in an 180-year-old building above the main strip in Mobile; work was four blocks away and all the nightspots you could want started on my block. There is a fantastic balcony that overlookeed a the town square/park, a cathedral, and "main street." Plenty of people watching spent on that balcony.
This apartment's availability was never advertised, and you had to be good friends/family of the owner/landlord just to know it of its availability. One of my co-workers was one of those people. You had to go through an interview process just to be considered. I went and looked at it, did the interview, and talked the owner into signing the lease the next day. And it was even cheaper than the one I was moving from. The only problem is that four months after moving in, my company announced they had been bought out by a company in Louisville; if I wanted to keep my job I would have to move there within a year. Which is exactly what I did. My entire stint in Mobile lasted less than two years, which is too bad because I really liked it.

• The first room was a dining room for others, and office for me.
• One side of the den had the fireplace.
• The wall of the den which was an exterior wall was 180-year-old exposed brick (three layers thick) and had the french doors to the balcony.
That's dad on the left.
• Ahhhh, overlooking the town square/park.
• At the edge of the park was a huge cathedral. The street below is Dauphin Street (main street of downtown Mobile.)
That's mom on the right.
• Small but funky Kitchen. It had the same checkerboard tile floor as the bathroom and a window that led out to a mini (6'x6') atrium.
• The batroom. The hot water heater tank was located under the sink in the cabinets - it was good for about 4 minutes of hot water during a shower.
• The place followed a floorplan that is very popular in New Orleans - "shotgun." The rooms were pretty much in a line and a single hallway connected them.
• The bedroom. It had the other exterior wall, and again it's the three-layer, 180-year-old brick. Just like the other rooms, it was very small. It barely fit my queen-sized bed and a tiny end-table. My closet was at the foot of the bed and didn't give much room for my dresser - the door couldn't clear it to open fully.
